Crossing Hennessy (traditional Chinese: 月滿軒尼詩; simplified Chinese: 月满轩尼诗; pinyin: yuè mǎn xuānníshī) is a 2010 Hong Kong film directed by Ivy Ho. It was filmed from March to May 2009, and stars Jacky Cheung and Tang Wei. It is a remake of Crossing Delancey(1988).
It is a return to film both for Cheung, who has not appeared in a film for several years, and for Tang, who was banned from acting in mainland China after appearing in Ang Lee's 2007 Lust, Caution. It is the second film directed by Ho (who began her career as a screenwriter). Other actors in the film include Danny Lee Sau-Yin, Paw Hee-Ching, Maggie Cheung Ho-Yee, and Andy On.
The story mainly takes place around Hennessy Road, in Hong Kong Island's Causeway Bay and Wan Chai districts.
In May 2009 it was announced that the film would be shown at the Cannes Film Festival. It will also be shown at the 2010 Hong Kong International Film Festival alongside Clara Law's "Like a Dream" as a kick start for the opening event.
Loy (Jacky Cheung), a 41-year-old bachelor who lives with his mother (Paw Hee-Ching) and aunt (Chu Mi-Mi), often goes to match-making lunches setup by his mother. His mother owns and operates a electrical store setup by his deceased husband (Lovell Lo) in Wan Chai. Loy's mother is an accountant (Danny Lee Sau-Yin)'s love interest. He keeps a dog and brings it with him everywhere.
Orphaned Oi Lin (Tang Wei) lives with and works for her uncle and aunt (her mother's brother and his wife) in a bathroom appliances store on Lockhart Road. She is in a relationship with Xu (Andy On) which her uncle disapproves, due to his often run in with the law. He thus setup a match-making lunch for her and Loy with Loy's mother.
Loy and Oi Lin did not fall for each other at their first meeting. But their families kept their hopes up. Loy's mother made Loy deliver a dehumidifier to Oi Lin's store personally. Then Oi Lin's uncle made her go for tea with Loy at a nearby Cha chaan teng (Honolulu Coffee Shop). The two stuck up a friendship after discovering a mutual interest in detective stories.
Loy forgets to pay the business registration fee and has to go to court to receive a fine. On his way out he meets Oi Lin, who was in court to hear Xu's prison assault case. Loy and Oi Lin walks around and Loy discovers Oi Lin has a rotten tooth. Oi Lin confesses that she has a boyfriend in prison. Loy claims Oi Lin's store is on the other side of Hennessy Road, nearby the Inland Revenue offices, which he dislikes and will not cross the road to see her.
Their families, upon discovering their friendship, misunderstood it to be romance and began talking about wedding banquet arrangements. Loy explains to his mom this is not the case and Oi Lin has a boyfriend. Loy's mom called Oi Lin's aunt and called them cheats. Oi Lin became very upset, bought a new dehumidifier and returns it personally to Loy's store.
Loy's former girlfriend Man Yu (Maggie Cheung Ho-Yee), a professional photographer, came back to see him after her divorce. She started her own studio and hired him as a prison cell model for her photoshoot for a magazine. Meanwhile, Oi Lin's boyfriend is released from prison after serving time for an assault case. She helps him rent a flat and buys a van so that he can do delivery work for a living.
Loy's mother mistook her sister's having tea with the accountant as a betrayal. She scolded her so furiously she has to be hospitalized for heart attack. Loy's aunt tells him tearfully that she only had tea with the accountant and there was nothing between them.
Loy and Oi Lin grow increasingly uneasy about their relationships with Man Yu and Xu respectively, while their feelings for each other grow. Loy tells Man Yu that he is finally in love with someone, but does not know if he is good enough for her.
Oi Lin finally broke up with Xu, the separation upset him so much he treks down Loy to beat him up. Loy, though beaten up and is no match for Xu, claims he is better than Xu because he can make Oi Lin smiles. Xu finally understands and leaves Oi Lin to start his new life.
Oi Lin goes for a routine check-up at the dentist (Ekin Cheng) and discovers that she has a rotten tooth. She smiles after she learned about her dental problem.
Loy's mother finally marries her accountant at the Cotton Tree Drive Marriage Registry to everyone's delight. After the wedding, Loy goes to the Cha Chaan Teng and finds Oi Lin in there reading a book. He joins her, she shows him she has no rotten tooth anymore. The two enjoy the afternoon together.
