The title of the film is derived from the African American tradition of bride and groom jumping over a ceremonial broom after being married.

TriStar Pictures distributed the film in the United States on May 6, 2011.

It should not be confused with the 2008 feature filmNoah's Arc: Jumping the Broom, directed by Patrik-Ian Polk and based on the LOGO television series , which features a gay marriage that also takes place on the island of Martha's Vineyard .

The plot is about two families who live on opposite sides of the social circle and have to get together for a marriage in the town of Chilmark on the island of Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts [3], where two members from both families will be wed.
