The opening film of the 34th Seoul Independent Film Festival, Let the Blue River Run captures the loves, lives, and dreams of Korean youth living in China. The first feature from director Kang Mi Ja, who did editing forTexture of Skin and Resurrection of the Butterfly, the 2008 indie drama is set in Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture (Yeonbyeon), a border region in northeast China with a high population of ethnic Koreans. Based on a novel by Yanbian natives Liang Chun Sik and Kim Nam Hyun, the film revolves around a high school couple who pledge their love at the Tumen River, but encounter many coming-of-age and relationship trials. Delving candidly into the world of Korean-Chinese teens, Let the Blue River Run provides a revealing portrait of the Korean diaspora and life at 17.
